AN ANALOGUE MIND IN A DIGITAL WORLD

About Us

Who we are...

We are Scot McKenzie and Mark Vickers, two roadies who've "toured the world and elsewhere" for over 25 years. In that time we've done gigs of every conceivable size from toilets to stadia on nearly every continent on earth (neither of us has ever done a gig in Antarctica). We've worked with legends, geniuses and downright idiots, as guitar techs, tour managers and sound engineers. Now we are bringing our experience and knowledge of both live and recorded music production to Bristol. The ethos behind New Cut Studios is to provide the best possible environment for creative work in the audio field and most especially music. We want to build a technical hub to support the many artistic activities in which musicians are involved. If you come to us you don't just get a room to make noise in: you get all the support and experience we've developed in the music industry over the last quarter century.

Where we are...

New Cut Studios can be found at Ferry Steps Trading Estate, where it backs onto the New Cut of the River Avon that was dug by navigators between 1804 and 1809. We're hoping to echo that enterprising spirit in our own venture. We are centrally located between St. Phillips and Totterdown: just across the river from The Thunderbolt over Totterdown Bridge; just along the river from The Paintworks; and just around the corner of Albert Road from Motion and The Marble Factory. And What3Words will bring you right to our door: ///held.cycle.maybe

We are only a five minute drive from Temple Meads railway station — or fifteen minutes on foot. And now that PMT have moved opposite Station Approach, we're only a 15 minute walk from a big music shop. Although if you just need strings, picks or sticks etc. we stock a small selection of spares onsite.

And what we've done...

The following is a section of Mark's CV.

Little Axe, Mark Stewart, King L, William Orbit, Black Grape, Moby, John Denver, Daft Punk, Us3, Red Snapper, Alpha, Catatonia, Asian Dub Foundation, Orbital, Basement Jaxx, Lamb, Hybrid, Bent, Freestylers, Zero 7, Dirty Vegas, Archive, Alfie, Stereo MCs, Heather Small, Simple Kid, Bonnie Tyler, Mike Scott, Edwin Collins, The Waterboys, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Skin, Martha Wainwright, Superthriller, M People, Pharrell, Primal Scream, Brett Anderson, Mystery Jets, Goldfrapp, Iglu & Hartly, Stone Gods, Killing Joke, Rox, Paloma Faith, Suede, Spiritualized, Chrissie Hynde, Twin Atlantic, The Maccabees, The Charlatans, Bellowhead, PJ Harvey, Paul Weller, Giant Sand, Will Young, UB40, Ocean Colour Scene, Jim Jones, Ride, and White Lies; many of whom are, or have been, regular clients. I am touring again with Paul Weller, and the bulk of our Covid cancellations have now been rescheduled for 2023/24. I’ve surely missed out some artists and I’ve done short stints with other acts not listed here.

I’ve had the privilege of working on one-off shows with many artists as a backline or guitar tech on showcases, TV & radio broadcasts, recording sessions, awards shows and the like, including The Bee Gees, Mike Oldfield, Aimee Mann, Paul Heaton and Nicole Scherzinger amongst others.

I have done many TV shows with band clients, Jools Holland, This Morning, Alan Carr, Andrew Marr, The One Show, Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Stephen Colbert and many other TV shows in Europe. When I lived in London I also worked regularly on long runs of shows such as The White Room, The Pepsi Chart Show, Jo Whiley and Top Of The Pops

I have stage-managed secondary stages on major festivals through several backline and audio hire companies. I’ve done shows from the middle of the Channel Tunnel to the middle of the Sinai desert: from toilets to tents to the Sydney Opera House, I’ve done every kind of venue on nearly every continent.

I chimped the Brit Awards for seven years running and, along with other large London shows, I have gained a lot of experience rigging lights, harness work, (re-addressing scans in the air, truss spot-opping, etc.) and have done warehouse work quite often at Neg Earth, Meteorlites, etc. I’ve done plenty of steel bashing on various stage systems. I’m even a pretty good third bird on a PA crew."

Recording Engineer

I have been recording bands for over 20 years from all over the UK and as far a field as Iceland.
